Chemistry in Middle School: Matter and Energy in Grades 6th-8th
The vertical alignment of the Science TEKS supports a scaffolded mastery of matter and energy across the middle school years. We will dive into the learning progression. In Grade 6, students develop foundational skills by identifying elements through physical properties and recognizing the macroscopic evidence of chemical change, such as temperature shifts or gas production. Grade 7 transitions from observation to analysis as students utilize the periodic table to decode chemical formulas and distinguish between physical and chemical alterations. This curriculum culminates in Grade 8, where students synthesize these concepts to investigate the Law of Conservation of Mass. By analyzing complex chemical equations like photosynthesis, students provide empirical evidence that atoms are merely rearranged in a closed system, ensuring that total mass remains constant.

Our main focus will be on the Middle School Science Assessment Eligible TEKS: Matter and Energy Strand 6.6CDE, 7.6BC, 8.6E
