Teaching To Kill a Mockingbird and other Novels
Join Donna Scherr for a great day of collaboration around teaching secondary novels, using To Kill a Mockingbird as a mentor text. You will be treated to great ideas from the February 21 Humanities Texas workshop in Dallas. Even if you have not read or taught this novel, no need to worry. We'll explore different ways to teach novels. 5th grade teachers are invited, but we will spend a little time focusing on tough issues such as how to handle controversial language. This workshop will be from 8:30-2:30, with teachers presenting their pre-work at morning rountables. Teachers must share their top three tips for teaching a novel in a 5 minute roundtable to earn 6 hours that day. However, teachers can earn the hour after the workshop and an additional 6 hours for additional work over the summer. Teachers should bring 10 copies of any handout. Please bring a digital device to access TEXQuest. If you are unfamiliar, contact your librarian for access!!!! Don't miss!
Special instructions
Bring any tool to help you and tools to show teachers of what you have done with a novel. Participants will be invited to a Google Classroom to post their best three ideas for teaching a novel. Teachers will share their ideas at a round table session from 8:30-9:00. Teachers can bring about 10 copies of any handout. And most importantly, bring a digital device so you can access various resources and your TEXQuest sign-in from your librarian!
